Kate Moss had her Birkin dangling from her arm as she ran errands in London on Friday. She made her way to Selfridges department store, where she met up with her on-again man Jamie Hince to pick up some takeout . Things were looking pretty hectic in Kate's life after a recent string of rough-looking late nights out, but now that she and Jamie have patched things up maybe she's taking his requests to settle down seriously.

Its really the house of Republicans whom I think bear it especially tonight. Two-thirds voted against it. You did have - to be fair to the Republicans, it was a Republican president, a republican Treasury Secretary who supported this, who pushed it, but it was House conservative Republican members who derailed it.
Now, they have strong reasons why they voted against it. But let there be no doubt that if we pay a huge price as we paid today, if we basically continue to pay a huge price in the next couple of days, lost a 1$.2 trillion as you said in equity value a day and it may get worse tomorrow and in the days following. Let there be no doubt it was the house Republicans who derailed this. They were against it from the beginning. They made that clear.
This business about Nancy Pelosi making a speech. Yes, she shouldnt have said that and yes that was inappropriate. But the fact that they changed their minds because of that, oh poor babies, she has a few words and the House Speaker, you know, made them run back to their partisan corners. You know, forget that nonsense.

Andrew, the lenders told them they could get the houses for nothing and then lied about how they would pay for it and what they would pay, then bundled the cash and passed it on And its not the governments role to tell people what they cannot do. Thats why we used to have regulations and background checks and down payments and mortgage lenders to oversee the system. It weeds out the people that can and cannot afford a home. He tried to deconstruct her argument because apparently he wasnt getting enough air time at that point (he filibustered the entire show after that) with nonsensical rationalizations on the current state of affairs. I lived through it and saw it up close and personal. Yea, he supports Obama, great, but his conservative ideology is a sham.
Andrew Sullivan has been conned by a fictitious notion of what conservatism really is. He states his Utopian vision of conservatism, but leaves out the part where conservatives want to deregulate everything and get rid of oversight and government so they can reap a magical harvest of cash like they have been doing during the entire Bush administration. Now we are seeing the results of conservatism. Its a failure. Does Sully really believe that conservatism exists without the fat cats expanding their pie of wealth in America to 1920s or pre-New Deal proportions? Theyve been trying to undo the New Deal ever since it was instituted and by the way which brought the country back from the brink of destruction.
Do you want Barack Obama or John McCain to make these decisions? I think the choice is easy. Conservative rule rains Armageddon down upon our headswhether it happens in two years or twenty. Its inevitable.

My First Obscurity Out

  • Sep. 17th, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Wow. Looks like this has been a week of firsts! Last Monday night, Julia and I decided to trying out the Suwon nightlife since shes in town for the week. We first went to a restaurant by my house for a meal of a style that Ive never seen in Canada. The tables have these BBQ-style holes in the middle with hot coals, and you put your meat on it to cook it. Then you cut it up, leave it on the grill, and eat it with some accompaniment (Kimchi, pickles). Its pretty cool. I think the communal aspect of eating is really big in Korea. It was a really tasty and interesting meal. Im not too sure what its called though. Thats the problem with eating here, I still dont know what things are, so ordering involves a lot of gesturing. In fact, this meal was chosen for us my another client who saw we clearly didnt know what to order. The whole thing cost 13$, 3$ of which was a bottle of soju. A mighty fine deal for a meal for 2.
After this, we took a bus to Suwon Station. This is apparently one of the hip spots in Suwon (the other being the new and trendy Yongtown). I think its fair to point out that at this point I was finishing off my second bottle of soju (bottles are 360ml and 20%). Julia doesnt drink, but I think she was drunk by proxy. So we walked around the main drag for a bit, trying t o find a cool dance club for her. Finding a cool spot is super hard when you cant read anything and each building has 4 or 5 stories. You basically need to look for people going to places and follow them, sometimes you can also see into the spots through the windows. We went to a place called BOSS because there was a neon sign with people dancing. Maybe it was another kind of that took place at this establishment because the drink menu started at around 60$ and was bottle service (where you buy bottles of liquor, not glasses). Regardless what kind of bar it was, we left pretty quickly.
We left BOSS and wandered around a bit more. Eventually, some dude walked out of a spot and asked us if we needed help. We said we were looking for a dance club and he told us of a place called Tunnel Night Club. Only problem was that Tunnel Night Club is a little ways off from Suwon Station and you need to take a cab. He wrote down the name in Korean so we could show it to the cab driver and off we were.
In Korea, there are two kinds of cabs. The expensive kind that starts at 4.50$ and the cheap kind that starts at 2.50$. I think the expensive kind has drivers in suits, and the invcrements might be more expensive. Besides that, there is no difference. We accidentally too an expensive cab to the Tunnel Night Club. It cost us like 6.20$, which is nothing in Canada, but enough for supper in Korea. So we get there and walk up to the bouncer, smiling and excited to be there. The bouncer looks at us, smiling and goes, no foreigners. Shit.
We walked around a bit to see if there was another more tolerant place, but there wasnt. Im not even sure where we were. So at this point its like 1:15am and we simply decided to cab it back to my place and call it a night. The cab (this time of the cheap variety) cost around 5$ to get back. Its pretty wild because we were a fair ways from my place and a little ways from Suwon Station, yet it cost less to travel more distance in the cheap cab.
Anyway, the night wasnt lost. We went to the corner store and picked up some snacks to finish off the night. I really hope next time I go out, things go way better. At least there was an interesting experience out of it.

Tropic Thunder. Come Get Some. It was movie night, and The Girlfriend and I were in the mood for a comedy. The last time we had a good chuckle at the cinema was when we saw the trailer for , just before the screening of The Dark Knight, and we were in the mood for similar belly laughs.

Thus, we decided to check out Tropic Thunder, the new flick starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jnr. The basic plot revolves around a group of pampered Hollywood actors filming a war movie, who end up in the middle of a jungle in south-east Asia, and find themselves in a real-life war situation.

This isn't your standard Will Ferrel type comedy though. The humour doesn't jump up at you, it's more understated, and gently mocks various genres and industries. I think it's what is referred to as a , NOT to be confused with a spoof - like those shitty Epic Movies that come out every few months. The dialogue is clever and witty, and you will need to have a bit of a brain to get some of the jokes.

Tropic Thunder is also an action film, I wouldn't really describe it as a full on comedy. In fact, yes, I would actually describe it as an action comedy like... like... okay, I can't actually think of a suitable example right now but you should get my drift.

It's an action film with large dollops of humour firmly shoved up it's arse. Ben Stiller plays the typical Hollywood blockbuster star called Tug Speedman, who's career is dying a slow death and desperately needs another hit movie. A bit like Vin Diesel, but with hair.

Robert Downey Jnr plays a five time Oscar winner called Kurt (or Kirk?) Lazarus, a blonde blue eyed Australian. He is also a hardcore method actor who is playing the role of a black guy. He pisses everyone off though by insisting on staying in character throughout.

Jack Black is a Hollywood comedian who is trying his hand at a more dramatic movie. He usually makes his money through crass, toilet humour films where he plays multiple characters and farts for laughs. (If you're not sure about the real-life actor his character is mocking, I will give you a hint - it rhymes with Teddy Smurphy)

Anyhoo, I liked the movie in that it satisfied me both from an action point of view, as well as providing me with laughs. Highlights of the film includes the opening, consisting of various fake trailers showing the respective stars in upcoming movies. There is the witty dialogue, with one memorable scene where they discuss how Hollywood critics only praise actors who play slightly retarded characters (ie: Rain Man, Forrest Gump) rather than those who go full retard.

There is also one surprising and hilarious cameo from an actor who proves that he doesn't take himself as seriously as everyone thinks. Email me and I'll tell you who it is.

So what didn't we like about the film?

There are one or two or gory scenes which probably didn't have to be there. At times, Downey Jnr, in his black guy voice, is difficult to understand. The Girlfriend also pointed out that it was very much a Dick Flick (the male equivalent of a Chick Flick) and in fact, I can't recall actually seeing a woman in the entire movie.

All in all though, it's an entertaining film that definitely has repeat viewing potential.

Tropic Thunder scores a Steve-O rating of 3.5.

The delegation started off today to news that the convention was set to resume as planned. With the threat from Hurricane Gustav diminishing, sprits were high and it appeared that the convention could become more festive. We were informed that we would hear from several high-profile speakers including First Lady Laura Bush, Sen. Joe Lieberman and former Sen. Fred Thompson.

The delegation was also treated to a morning speech from Iowa senator and 1st Congressional District candidate David Hartsuch. Senator Hartsuch has been a strong leader in the Iowa Senate for the conservative movement and our delegation was happy to hear from him.

As the day wore on, several VIPs such as 3rd District Congressional Candidate Kim Schmett arrived to accompany the delegation to day two of the convention. I however, did not join the delegation for day two. I passed my credentials on to another delegate who took my space on the floor then I and ventured outside of the secure zone around the convention, making my way to the Target Center in Minneapolis where Congressman Ron Paul was holding a sort of "alternative convention" with special guest former Gov. Jesse Ventura.

Several reports on the morning news spoke of almost riot conditions in some parts of St. Paul on Monday when violent protesters actually engaged local police leading to the use of tear gas and fire hoses. I had also spoken with a Bloomington resident who told me that she had been in St. Paul when those events took place and was so afraid of the protesters that she wasn't planning on returning to St. Paul until Friday when the convention was over. Armed with that information, I was a little worried about venturing out on my own beyond the secured gates of the convention. However, on my way from the convention center to the Target Center I didn't see anything resembling a riot, or even a protest. I was able to make it to the Ron Paul "alternative convention" unscathed.

Ron Paul has always been something of a curiosity to me. Before I left for the Republican National Convention, I received two official-looking DVDs labeled as "time-sensitive information for delegates." From the look of the covers on the DVDs, it was my assumption that they contained information like convention rules, procedure and a snapshot of what to expect in St. Paul. To my surprise however, neither of the DVDs contained any such information. Both of them were 2-hour-long advertisements for Ron Paul, one of which was very negative against the Republican nominee, John McCain.

I would like to say that I was shocked, but this is really something I have come to expect from Ron Paul's over-zealous supporters. What I do find surprising is the vast diversity in Ron Paul's supporters. A few members of our delegation supported Ron Paul and they are very intelligent, articulate and well-intentioned people. This is in direct contrast to the Ron Paul supporters who put out these DVDs. That diversity among his supporters never ceases to amaze me.

Paul's "alternative convention" reminded me a lot of the "alternative forum" that Congressman Paul held in Des Moines last year when he was not invited to participate in the candidate forum hosted by the Iowa Christian Alliance and Iowans for Tax Relief.

I have always been fascinated by the swarms of people who are attracted to Ron Paul in spite of his almost total unavailability as a candidate. After all, Ron Paul's rhetoric isn't exactly new. He is essentially saying the same thing today that he's been saying since his Libertarian days in the late 1980s but now, in the twilight of his political life, it seems as though someone finally got the memo.

Following a short visit to the Ron Paul convention, I made a two-block journey to a popular Minneapolis night club where former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee was scheduled to play a concert with country music star Josh Turner in honor of the Arkansas delegation.

As Governor Huckabee's former Iowa political director, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to see him and the rest of our staff again. By the time I finally arrived, the convention in St. Paul had ended and scores of delegates from around the country had boarded buses and were en route to the Huckabee reception.

After being handed my VIP pass and making the rounds chatting with old friends now employed with Huck PAC (Huckabee's Political Action Committee) I was told that the RSVP list was over 750 people and at least 100 more than that were likely to just show up. This was a far cry from the crowds of 20 people who came to meet Governor Huckabee in Pizza Ranches across Iowa last summer.

It's sort of heart-warming to see how far Governor Huckabee had come since I started working for him in February of 2007. In those days, we were always struggling to turn out even a handful of people to hear him speak around Iowa. Those days are long gone.

I guess it was appropriate that Huckabee's band, by playing the Brooks Dunn hit "Only in America." This song brings back two memories for me: The first was when it was played when Huckabee took the stage to claim victory in the Iowa caucus on Jan. 3rd of this year. The second was when it was played when Huckabee took the stage to concede defeat in the South Carolina Primary on Jan. 19. I was personally with him on both occasions. They represent both the highest high, and lowest low of the campaign and the song "Only in America" was played at both. To hear him play it tonight was bittersweet for me and allowed me to personally reflect on a time in my life that I am truly grateful to have been a part of ... even in the middle of a crowded night club packed with dancing delegates, holding glow sticks and singing along with the band.

-- Enos was former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's political director during his victorious Republican caucus campaign.

BC One Tour - Ceasers Darkness Club

  • Aug. 24th, 2008 at 1:05 AM

The Red Bull BC One Exhibition Tour kicks off this week on the east coast with seven top international Bboys hitting our shores to showcase their skills.

A series of shows and workshops will take place in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney from 14 to 30 August. Benny (RSA), Hong 10 (KOR), Lilou (FRA), Physicx (KOR), Roxrite (USA), Ben-J (SEN) and Pelézinho (
A) make up the crew and are sure to get the crowds screaming with their intricate footwork combined with original power moves.

The tour is a taste of what can be expected at the annual Shadow Wars competition, commonly touted as one of the premiere breaking events in Australia. Come November, Paris, France will be heating up to host the 2008 Red Bull BC1. Previously, hosts have included Johannesburg, São Paulo and Berlin.

The Red Bull BC One Exhibition Tour winds up in Sydney with the international guests judging Australia's best Bboys in the Shadow Wars III event, ultimately deciding who Australia's best is. Now in its third year, Shadow Wars is taking Australian breaking to the next level. Supported by Red Bull Rockstar Games, the prize pool includes cash and a trip for Australia's best Bboy to attend the Red Bull BC One in Paris, France.

Red Bull's support of breaking in Australia is great. Bringing out Bboys of this standard shows the level of breaking internationally and really helps the development of the local scene says Shadow Wars event director, Mason Rose.

All of the exhibition shows are free to attend. For more information, head to www.redbull.com.au and follow the links to Red Bull BC One Exhibition Tour  www.sevenshadows.com.

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 5:08 PM

I am sure that many of you have gone to a night club at sometime in your lives right? Well the next time you are at your favorite club take a look at the many different types of clothing that people are wearing. As you look at these night club clothes you will notice that many of the clothing that women wear are short and shimmery. The clothes are made this way because the general style of womens night club clothes is made to look sexy as she moves in time to the music.
Now just in case you might think that you are overdressed you will find that some of the women at these clubs are also wearing elegant evening dresses as well and these blend in with the level of sophistication that is the order of the day. The main thing that you will need to see about in the type of clothes that you wear for the various night clubs is that they are still acceptable by the majority of night clubbers.
So where can you find night club clothes that are in the style that will make you feel comfortable but are still spectacular enough to attract lots of interest (good)? Well there are many department stores that sell different types of evening wear.
In many cases you will find that these clothes are easily adaptable for use as night club clothes. You should look for clothes that look good when you wear them and dont seem to cause you any embarrassing moments as you move. For instance you will need to see if the hemline of your dress or skirt will rise up exposing more of your body than you want.
