Nothing in this place is ever simple. Anita's mum is visiting right now, and we'd decided to take her to see the tigers on Sun Island. The tigers are said to be more active in the snow than in the summer, so this was the time to see them. Little did we know that, despite the big cats' fearsome size and splendour, it will be the surreal nature of our journey back we'll remember a lot longer.

It takes a bumpy half hour on the number five bus to reach the white, frozen wastes of the far side of Sun Island. Inside the park are around 40-50 big cats, a mixture of cubs, immature adults, grown males and females. The tigers are larger than life, arrogant and striking. First of all, you're taken to an outdoor compound in a little bus, from where you can watch two or three huge males thrown half-cows, legs, haunches, heads (bought by the more ghoulish of the punters), the tigers pouncing and crunching. One massive male came right up to the bus window. You could see its breath on the glass. It straddled the bus, front paws near enough touching the roof, growled, then turned its back on us and proceeded to piss on the windows. The glass froze over yellow-green, the colour of a lime Popsicle, and as it froze we couldn't see anything more.

Next, you go into a yard full of walkways with wire walls, where numerous tigers of different ages are hanging about in pens. The little ones wrestle, the older ones lounge in the corners or pad back and forth restlessly, paws leaving huge indentations in the snow. The orange and black of the cats, and their huge yellow eyes, contrast abruptly with the snow's dirty white. The tigers are gorgeous, and I have never been so close up to an animal of their size and beauty before. Too close, for one shocking moment: I was foolishly trying to poke my camera through a gap in the wire when a large male looked straight at me. Suddenly, from a supine position at the opposite end of the enclosure, in a supple orange blur it had bounded across and had its front paws on the wire where my camera had been a moment earlier. My legs wobbled and I fell back. The tiger growled righteously then strutted slowly away.

Fast-forward to late afternoon, and the temperature's dropped as quick and viciously as a pouncing cat. The sun is setting red and orange against the tabletop-flat arctic tundra landscape, staining the land bloodily. There are no busses and no taxis, and we've no idea how to get home. The other visitors to the tiger park have already left, ignoring our beseeching looks. Not one of them in their fancy cars offered us a lift back. Mind you, there are six of us: Clive, Tam and I making up the male contingent, Anita, her mum, and Gina the female. We walk out of the car park to the road. A white track, slowly being hidden under the new snowfall, stretches without end in either direction. The sky goes suddenly black. The wind howls. Snow strafes our faces. From a crisp sunny day, we're suddenly stuck in a blizzard, and in the middle of nowhere.

Clive asked one of the park attendants what we should do. He suggested walking as far as the edge of the nearest town, and getting a bus back to the city from there. We stood around debating this until we realised we were going to freeze unless we took action. So, we trudged off down the slippery, narrow road, in the hope, rather than the expectation, of finding transport, any kind of transport. Our toes went numb. We lost all feeling in our faces. Our hopes sank lower with every step. There was nothing on the road, not a car, bus or bike. We were the only people out there. Thin bare trees on either side of the road gave a bleak perspective of the distance we had to walk. There were no houses, barns, or animals in the fields except, disconcertingly, a set of huge paw prints in the snow, heading in the same direction as us. Too big for a domestic pet, too tiger-shaped for a donkey; we began to worry.

We trudge through this Siberian wasteland for some time until a most unholy-looking saviour emerges suddenly from the white. A motorbike taxi: an ancient bike with a tiny garden shed attached to the back; a cross between a rickshaw and a mobility scooter; a ramshackle hut, with an ill-fashioned seat for two, on wheels. The driver's wearing thick boots, a long green Russian army-issue coat, a furry hat and has huge gloves attached to the throttle and brake of the decrepit bike. He pulls up and hails us through the blizzard. We begin to bargain with him then realise we'd pay him anything, hell, even offer him our three female companions for a night of fun and frolics, to save us from freezing to death out here. Then we realise the awful truth: there's six of us, and this is a two-seater

'Well, ladies first,' says Tam, ever the bloody gentleman.

'Get in mum,' Anita's pushing her mother towards the mobility scooter.

'What about me?' Gina wails from behind us.

'Get in too,' says Anita, 'we can fit in three people at a push.'

Three ordinary-sized people, maybe. We realised that Gina was never going to fit into that little wooden shed along with Anita and her mum. However, the women refused to leave without her. So the six of us are standing there arguing at the top of our voices in a blizzard: You go, no you go, but I don't want to go if she doesn't go, well we'll go then get a taxi and come back for you, well, we could do that too... The driver revs his engine, suggesting that somebody better bloody-well get in or he's off.

'Right, FUCK IT!' Tam shouts, 'if you lot aren't getting in then I am!'

He marches up to the mobility scooter, me right behind him, and gets in. I squeeze in alongside. We catch sight of the three women, standing forlornly in the snowstorm. There's a cry.

'Wait for me, guys! Don't leave me here!' and Clive jumps headfirst into the tiny shed.

As there's not enough room, Clive ends up lying across our laps, his feet, legs and arse dangling out of the door. The driver, in a fit of frozen pique, gets off the bike and starts slamming the door on Clive's arse. It won't shut. The driver then starts shoving Clive, cramming him in inch by inch like he's packing a suitcase. Tam and I groan and curse, slowly being crushed against the flimsy walls of the shed. Eventually, with a final kick to the buttocks, the driver gets Clive in, slams the door, and we take off into the night leaving three damsels in snowy sub-zero distress.

However, after thirty seconds of being thrown about in the back of the mobility scooter, we were beginning to wish we'd never gotten in it. Clive was crushing us and, as the scooter skidded and slipped along the icy roads, we began to fear for our lives. Although the driver certainly knew where the accelerator was, cranking the little bike up to full speed like a bobsleigh, he seemed to have lost the brake. The road was full of pot-holes and bumps, covered in snow and black ice, and bordered on either side by a six-foot deep drainage ditch, but with its disproportionate weight in the back relentlessly dragging the little machine off-course, all the driver could think of doing was going faster.

I began to understand the true meaning of karma. This kind of karma was of the instant variety. If you could bottle it, and print the instructions 'Just add water' on the label, you'd be a rich man in no time at all. I saw myself dead in the drainage ditch amidst a carnage of body parts, wood and metal, perfectly preserved until the spring thaw, then to be eaten by the escaped tiger. I offered a silent prayer to the golden Buddha that I would always, and I mean always, let ladies go first in the future, if only he'd deposit me back in Harbin in one piece.

I was more amazed than relieved to see the orange lights of the little town. The driver, still unsure of where the brake pedal was, brought our nightmare journey to a halt by killing the engine, aiming the scooter at an eight-foot high bank of snow, and sliding sideways into it. We fell out of the shed, threw some money at him, and ran for the bus, which had just conveniently pulled up ahead of us. On the bus we eventually began to thaw out. Feeling in fingers and toes returned with a vengeance, ears stung, and we began to be able to move our mouths. This brought about the first mention of the girls. In low tones, as if someone might overhear us, we discussed our feelings of regret, guilt, worry, and self-justification, finally blaming Tam.

When we got back to the college, we were surprised to see the girls sitting with their feet up in the lounge, cups of steaming hot tea in hand, having already told everyone what absolute bastards we were. Two minutes after our departure in the mobility scooter, they'd flagged down a bus and were taken straight back to the college.

The 2nd annual Fn Champs hockey pool will be done in a draft style this Sunday at Boomers Bar and Grill (above the rinks) after the game. Teams will consist of 6 forwards, 4 defencemen and a goalie, which ironically is roughly the amount of guys well get out for a midweek 10 PM game.

Mangal Pandey is a Sepoy in the army controlled by the East India Company, a company that had entered Hindustan to trade, but subsequently showed their true colors, exploited the natives, divided, and ruled over them. But the Company treated their employees well. It was only a rumor that the cartridges of a new rifle were greased with the dead flesh of cows and pigs that set off a protest, which came to rest after the Hindustani soldiers received assurances from their senior most officer as well as Captain William Gordon, and Mangal became the first soldier to bit the bullet and pour the gunpowder in his barrels. Then it became a fact that the bullets were indeed greased with cows and pigs, an enraged Mangal confronts the system, and is assured that the cartridges will be replaced. Then comes the shock, for the Company had no intention of replacing the cartridges, and as a result Mangal incites a rebellion in the 300,000 strong Hindustani soldiers - a rebellion which is all set to take place on May 31st. Angr sweeps the country, as Muslims and Hindus, both offended by the use of cow and pig flesh respectively, the manner in which they have been ill-treated, called "kaala khutas" (black dogs) by the Caucasian soldiers, and the need to rid the Company and their masters once and for all. Watch what happens when the Company finds out about the rebellion, and the steps that they take to stop it - before it balloons out of proportion - giving them no alternative save to leave Hindustan.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising (Indian title) or The Ballad of Mangal Pandey (international title) (released in India on August 12, 2005) is an Indian movie based on the life of Mangal Pandey who is known for his role as a leader in the Indian rebellion of 1857 which led to the downfall of the British East India Company. It is directed by Ketan Mehta, produced by Bobby Bedi, and with a screenplay by Farrukh Dhondy.

Aamir Khan, a leading Bollywood actor, plays the lead role of Mangal Pandey. Mangal Pandey was a Sepoy who helped spark the Indian rebellion of 1857. Subsequently the mutiny was called "The Sepoy Mutiny" or "The Sepoy Rebellion" by most of the English-speaking world, while Indians referred to it as the "First War of Independence".

Synopsis

The film begins in 1857, when India was ruled by the British East India Company. Mangal Pandey (portrayed by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan) is a soldier (Sepoy) for the East India company who is fighting in the Anglo-Afghan Wars and who saves the life of his British commanding officer, William Gordon (portrayed by Toby Stephens). Gordon is indebted to Mangal and a strong friendship develops between them, transcending both rank and race.

The friendship, however, is soon challenged by a number of factors. One is the arrival of a charming and beautiful young aristocrat, Emily Kent (portrayed by Coral Beed). Later, after Gordon rescues the young widow, Jwala (portrayed by Amisha Patel) from committing Sati (the act of following her deceased husband into the funeral pyre), he falls in love with her. In addition, Heera (portrayed by Rani Mukerji) has been sold into prostitution, to work for Lol Bibi (portrayed by Kiron Kher). She soon catches the eyes of Mangal Pandey and a liaison follows.

The most significant factor, however, is the introduction of a new rifle, the Enfield Rifled Musket. Rumors began to spread among the Sepoys that the cartridges (referring here to cardboard wrapped powder and shot, not metallic cartridges) were greased with either pig fat or beef tallow- an abhorrent concept to Muslim and Hindu soldiers, respectively, for religious reasons. British military drills of the time required soldiers to bite open the cartridge, pour the gunpowder contained within down the barrel, then ram the cartridge paper down the barrel to act as a wad, before finally ramming a musketball down the barrel, removing the ram-rod, shouldering the rifle, adding a percussion cap, and firing. The idea of having anything which might be tainted with pig or beef fat in their mouths was unacceptable to the Sepoys. When they objected, it was suggested that they were more than welcome to make up their own batches of cartridges, using a religiously acceptable greasing agent such as beeswax or vegetable oil. This served to the Sepoys as "proof" that the issued cartridges were, in fact, greased with pig and/or beef fat, and a further suggestion that the sepoys tear the cartridges open with their hands (instead of biting them open) was also rejected as being impractical- many of the sepoys had been undertaking musket drill daily for years, and the practice of biting the cartridge open was second nature to them.

Gordon assures Mangal that the cartridges are free from pollution and demonstrating his total trust in Gordon, Mangal bites the cartridge. The soldiers soon discover that the cartridges really are greased by animal fat and the rumour of this imposed pollution is the spark that ignites the powder keg of resentment in the country. Mutiny breaks out, led by Mangal.

The film ends with documentary footage of Mahatma Gandhi.

2.00 pm - went to Damansara to a car showroom because parents were interested in a car. it was CLOSED!! eventhough it stated in the website that they are open on public hols. Drove back home, it was raining cats dogs.

3.15pm - arrived home and continued with visa application.

4.45pm - rain finally stopped. So, we headed off to bazaar ramadhan. YAY

5.40pm - the only time that I felt hungry throughout the day. lol

7.20pm - Open fast! Had rice (again) with :-
- ayam berempah
- some vege with yellowish soup
- ikan masin
- curry puff
- cempedak goreng
- sirap bandung

8.15pm - went to the mosque to perform isya' and terawih prayers ( 8 raqaat only)
after the terawih ended one of the imams gave a speech telling the mu'mins ( those who come to pray) to dont complain if they recite the surah slowly. lol of course not

10.00pm - headed back home after terawih.

- bubur pulut hitam

11.30pm - completed visa application (finally), just waiting for accomodation letter from uni.

IS: I guess the good news about being out of the playoffs, other than the profit margin on those last game tix, is that for the first time in quite a while, I will have an uninterrupted stretch where I can enjoy them. Whenever the Yanks get eliminated, I have about a 1-week pouting period where I really can't bring myself to watch any games. I already had my week-long snit, so I am seriously ready to watch me some postseason baseball! Oh, until about the 6th inning, when I have to go to bed. Fucking MLB.

LB: Yeah - I don't know who I want to win it all this year. I guess I have to go Brewers. If only for that fat chick who broke the bar stool in that place on the river. Plus I want to see if Sabathia can pitch 19 games in the playoffs.

UW: I gotta go Cubs. Not for the sentimental reasons everyone else gives. No - I'm rooting for them because I think Chi is the town most likely to riot if their team wins (or loses for that matter). We need us a good old fashioned sports riot - by yar, it's been a while!!

LB: Yeah...I could see the Milwaukee fans getting rather sluggish pretty early into a riot. Plus barely 5 minutes into the cop car on fire the methane from the sausage farts would wipe out 1/2 the rioters.

IS: I was rooting for Milwaukee to get in but now that they are there, I cannot pull for them to win the whole shmear, and the reason is all of five letters long: Selig. I go Cubs too, and it probably is for sentimental reasons - which is lame, but those same sentimental reasons are the ones that cause me to hope for Kevin Youkilis to get hit in the face with a Carlos Zambrano fastball, so it evens out. I guess that of teams still alive, my rooting order would go:

IS: A few of these are very close - I mean, Brewers vs. Phillies is basically a coin toss. I would have the Rays higher if they weren't in the AL East. It will hurt a little to have two teams in the division with more recent championships than the Yanks. It's probably not even right so much to rank the teams, as to categorize them:

- I'm actively rooting for the Cubs.
- It would also be fun to have the Rays, Brewers, Dodgers, or Phils win it.
- I'm contractually obligated to root somewhat for the Twins.
- I couldn't care less about the White Sox or Angels.
- If my family were held hostage and would only be released in the event of a Red Sox WS win, I would have to think about whether to root for them.

LB: Ahh...the Rays winning more recently than the Yanks wouldn't bother me - because it's not like the Tampa Bay fan will be a total dick about it. He's probably too busy napping and eating at the Olive Garden. The Red Sox fans on the other hand...well, nuff said. Aside from that - I really don't care one way or the other. If the Cubs were to win, which team will have had the longest streak without winning a title? Might be Houston? I don't know...but it would be nice to not have to hear about any of that shit anymore.

IS: A few of these are very close - I mean, Brewers vs. Phillies is basically a coin toss. I would have the Rays higher if they weren't in the AL East. It will hurt a little to have two teams in the division with more recent championships than the Yanks. It's probably not even right so much to rank the teams, as to categorize them:

- I'm actively rooting for the Cubs.
- It would also be fun to have the Rays, Brewers, Dodgers, or Phils win it.
- I'm contractually obligated to root somewhat for the Twins.
- I couldn't care less about the White Sox or Angels.
- If my family were held hostage and would only be released in the event of a Red Sox WS win, I would have to think about whether to root for them.

LB: Ahh...the Rays winning more recently than the Yanks wouldn't bother me - because it's not like the Tampa Bay fan will be a total dick about it. He's probably too busy napping and eating at the Olive Garden. The Red Sox fans on the other hand...well, nuff said. Aside from that - I really don't care one way or the other. If the Cubs were to win, which team will have had the longest streak without winning a title? Might be Houston? I don't know...but it would be nice to not have to hear about any of that shit anymore.

The Score Kootenay 3 Calgary 1

What Happened? Kootenay played their finest game of the young season. Outskating, out-hustling and out-chancing the Hitmen most of the night.

The Goaltender - So much so that if it wasnt for overage goaltender Dan Spence and his 38 saves on 40 shots this one couldve got ugly. It is hard to imagine the wealth of overage players the Hitmen have. On top of Spence Calgary boasts D Keith Seabrook and LW Kyle Bortis all which played tonight. Sitting in the press box were RW Carson McMillan and C Ian Duval. On top of that 19-year-old goaltender Martin Jones, who went undrafted last June, is still at the LA Kings training camp. His return will create a logjam on top of a logjam in Hitmanland.

The Inspiration D Ian Barteaux, who had his best game in a Kootenay uniform, inspired his teammates and the Rec Plex Crowd with an assist on the game-winner and the decision in a fight with Hitmen tough guy Ian Schultz. Barteauxs arm-raising to the crowd to get on their feet electrified a normally docile Rec Plex crowd.

Tough night Schultz had a tough night. First the tilt with Barteaux and then he was on the wrong end of a vicious cross-check to the face by Ice forward Andrew Bailey that went un-called by referee Russ Berdusco. After they cleaned up the blood and Schultz returned from the dressing room Bailey hit him again, this time with a shoulder, opening the cut. The next shift D Eric Frere hit Schultz high again.

The Goals With the Ice killing a penalty forward Michael Stickland jumps on a lose puck and turns on the jets. A two-on-one with Dustin Sylvester ensued with Stickland finding the Kelowna product, making his home debut this season, for a one-timer past Spence. Calgary would tie it early in the second with the Hitmen on the power play. D Eric Frere would forget about Hitmen forward Brandon Kozun cheating at the blueline and D Keith Seabrook found Kozun and Kyle Bortis joined him for a two-on-nothing. Bortis buries his first to tie it. The game-winner was the result of some great cycling by Kootenays fourth line consisting of C Joe Antilla, LW Mike Cassivi and RW Jesse Ismond. Cassivi finds Ian Barteaux at the point who shoots the puck right to Ismonds stick, who wont score many easier goals in his WHL career.

Go to the net young man The Ice did that, all night, and were rewarded with the winning goal. It was deflection night and Steele Boomer had three of them, all of which were stopped by Spence.

The Brother Act - C Dustin Sylvester faced-off against his younger brother Cody, 16, for the first time since the family driveway in Kelowna. The younger Sylvester played some quality minutes.

The empty-netter In shades of former Ice import draft pick Patrick Stefan remember last season when the Dallas Stars forward was about to salt away the win with an empty-netter but missed the net, only to have the Oilers skate the length of the ice and score? Andrew Bailey missed a goal hell never forget when, with Dan Spence pulled in favour of an extra attacker, Kevin King finds Bailey on an empty-net breakaway who promptly misses the net from about ten feet. Shocked, awed including the Hitmen who joined the Rec Plex faithful in their disbelief Tylan Stephens picked up the lose puck and put it into the net, much to the chagrin of Bailey. To his credit Bailey played his best game of the season but it was on the defensive side of the game. Three blocked shots including two during a key two straight Hitmen power plays late were key.

Notable scratch For the second straight home game 18-year-old forward Kris Foucault was a healthy scratch. On a weekend that will surely decide which three or four players will be cut by the club Foucault is glaring ommision. The roster sits at 26 bodies with Negrins return. If the club decides to keep 23 players this season forward Jordan Bauer, D Joey Leach and one of either Foucault or Mike Cassivi could find themselves on their way out. Cassivi played well Friday. Foucault will need a great outing Saturday to get out of the doghouse.

Rumour or Fact? Word quickly made its way around the arena that D John Negrin will rejoin the club in Calgary Saturday night. That one is fact. The other was the possible return of D Alex Plante, who left the Hitmen before training camp asking for a trade, rejoining the club. That hasnt happened yet but word is that Hitmen GM Kelly Kisio is being low-balled for Plantes services in trade talks around the league, prompting a possible reunion.

The Crowd 2781. A lot of people missed a terrific hockey game on this evening.

The Skinny The return of Dustin Sylvester and Ian Barteaux made a world of difference for the speedy Ice. The return of D John Negrin for Saturdays return bill at the Saddledome tomorrow night from the Calgary Flames will help that much more.

OOK, B.C. - Western Hockey League summary for regular season game between the Calgary Hitmen and the Kootenay Ice. September 26, 2008. The Kootenay Ice fired 41 shots at Dan Spence, scoring on two of them, for a 3-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen in WHL Friday night.
Kootenay opened the scoring while killing a penalty when Michael Stickland found Dustin Sylvester who wired his second of the season to make it 1-0 after one period.
Less than a minute into the second period Keith Seabrook found a Brandon Kozun on a stretch pass that put he and Kyle Bortis on a two-on-none on Ice goaltender Thomas Heemskerk. Bortis made no mistake burying his first of the season 24 seconds into the period. Seven minutes later rookie Jesse Ismond found an Ian Barteaux point-shot on his stick with a wide-open net. Ismond potted his second of season and the eventual game-winner past Dan Spence.
Andrew Bailey almost got the empty-net goal but missed the open net from about ten feet only to have linemate Tylan Stephens pick up the lose puck and put into the net for the 3-1 Ice win.
Thomas Heemskerk stopped 16 of 17 shots to get the while Dan Spence was terrific in taking the loss, stopping 38 of 40 shots.

We had a good time 2 weeks ago, Thursday night after dinner we decided to go to the Ice Club for drinks. I wish I could say it was great but I think its a little overrated. The bar was cool (no pun intended) because everything was ice and we got to hang out in a little igloo but it was over priced and the place was empty. So we spent 15 Euros for entrance and one drink. Oh well at least i can say I've been to the Ice Bar in Rome. Saturday was a great day, the weather was beautiful for our trip up north to Viterbo, which is a perfectly preserved medieval city, the original wall still surrounds the center of the city. It was like taking a trip back in time. We walked through the town and met an old Italian man who showed us around his church. In the church was the body of St. Rosa on display and I was very surprised to see how well it was preserved. We stopped at a little family restaurant and had a really good, cheap lunch and the jumped on to a taxi to the monster park about 15 minutes away. In this park there were massive stone sculptures that each had their own stories. The most disturbing was the giant man raping the giant boy, needless to say we didn't stay at that one too long. The coolest was the leaning house. We were able to walk inside the house and the slope was so steep that it made you feel nauseous and it seemed like I had vertigo. We left the park and walked around to find a bus stop. Good thing we did because we walked through and up a small village in the mountains we found our way as high as we could and the views were amazing, we could see for miles. We even saw snow capped mountains which is a sight I have never seen in person. We finally made our way back down and found the bus stop and we found our way to what we were looking for all day...... The natural hot springs of Viterbo. The smell of the sulfur springs could be noticed a few hundred feet away. The smell of bad hard boiled eggs was not easy to get used to, but we all sucked it up, got in our suits and sat in the natural hot springs that have been used for thousands of years. When I got out of the springs it was the first time I was cold living in Italy. We then trekked all the way back to the train station which was about 3 Kilometers away from the springs. We had a few hours before our train back to Rome so we decided to eat at a Chinese restaurant. Just some advice, never eat at a Chinese restaurant outside of the states because it is terrible. The Train finally showed up around 10pm and to our surprise that was its last trip. We had to take a mini bus all the was back home and we finally got home at midnight. It was a very eventful 18 hour day. Another fun weekend living in Rome, too bad I have homework to do.

Presidents Message

Welcome new members and returning members to another year of curling! On behalf of the Blind River Curling Club, we look forward to seeing you all in the upcoming season. I look forward to working with the other board members toward ensuring a great year for all curlers.

Last year was a great year for the club. We had a large expenditure and managed to stay on top of the bill. There will be other projects to look ahead to this year to keep our club in as good shape as we can. We are investigating the cause of a leak that comes into the club behind the downstairs wall and onto the new carpet. We hope that this will not be a major project and can be remedied in a cost-efficient manner.

There are other projects to be looked at as well. The womens washrooms will be needing some attention as well as getting the monitors working for the overhead on-ice cameras.

Its shaping up to be another great year of curling! Not only can you expect the usual fun, laughter, and great curling in the ladies, mixed and mens spiels, this year you can expect more local curling events. In November, a cash spiel. Details to follow. In December, Blind River hosts the Mens regional playdowns with the winner advancing to the provincials. In February, Blind River will host the MNR spiel.

Last year, Mixed curling was a great success. We hope to see all of you back again this year for some more fun games. We hope that you talk to your friends. Get them to come out and try curling. The mixed league has always been a great way to introduce new curlers to the sport. As curlers, we are also advocates of the sport. Plus, curling is a great way to spend an evening with friends and meet new friends.

Preparations are already underway to getting the club ready for the start of the season. There will be a need for some assistance on September 29, September 30, and October 1. These are evening cleaning details to clean up the club. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Blind River is an excellent small town curling club. It is this way because of its members and the contributions they make to help keep the club throughout the year in various capacities. We could not survive without these efforts. If we all do our bit and give a little time to the club, the club will always be there to give it back.

WHATS NEW?

1. DUES: we have had to increase our dues by 8% because of added increases in utilities. See Dues section on page 4.

2. WEDNESDAY SPARE FEE: this fee has now been increased to $8.00 (from $7.00 last year).

3. PAY EARLY: no, there is no discount. However, it would help the Club immensely if any of you are able to pay your dues early (prior to Registration Night) by mailing directly to our Treasurer at Box 458. We are in a financial overdraft situation until the end of September, so this would help reduce our interest charges.

4. SHARE PURCHASE: waived again, the requirement that new members purchase a share has been suspended for this season for the second year. Plans are under way to convert the club from a shareholders corporation to a not-for-profit organization sometime in 2009. Normally, new members would pay $25.00 per year for 4 years to purchase the $100.00 share. If you are in the process of purchasing a share, you will not have to make the $25.00 payment again this year.

Save it as your favourite and it will always be there! Whats new is that Glen Austin is planning on reporting on the blogsite weekly with wins/losses from 3 of our leagues (mens, womens, and mixed). 1. CLUB ASSISTANT: We are happy to report that Scott Smith will be returning as our Club Assistant.

2. DISCOUNT: We will again have a discount for new adult members or returning members (after a 2 year absence); they will receive a $25.00 discount.

3. BAR PRICES: No increase in bar prices; however prices will be reviewed January 1st, 2009 depending on any cost increases.

4. FREE CURLING INSTRUCTION: For new and experienced curlers, men, women, and juniors, on October 17, 7 to 9pm, and October 18, 2 to 4pm.

5. CURLING SUPPLIES IN THE CLUB: Grippers, gloves, brooms, stabilizers and shoes are stocked at the Club and sold at a discount. These are displayed in the downstairs cabinet and can be purchased at the bar. If its not in stock, it can be ordered. This service generates revenue for our club. So, consider upgrading your equipment and purchase it at the club (also makes nice Christmas gifts).

6. CURL MORE THAN ONCE OR TWICE/WEEK: With mixed leagues established on both Monday and Wednesday, members are welcome to curl on the same or different teams any or all evenings.

7. SPARES: Every person listed as a member of a team must pay full dues. Team members cannot pay spare fees only. This is only fair to those who pay full dues but cannot make every game. The $12.00 spare fee is meant to attract non-members on a periodic basis in the hope that they will join the Club in the future. It should not be used to compare spare fees throughout the year versus a full membership. Our membership fees continue to remain among the lowest in all of Ontario.

However we try to have a Newsletter for you once a month by photocopying approximately 60 copies (to keep costs down), and leaving them at the club for you to take and/or peruse while youre at the club. REPORT FROM FRED CLEARY, our mixed league convenor:

Well, curlers, its almost time to put the golf clubs away (just kidding!) It is time to start thinking of the new curling season and what type of schedule to use. Last spring, I put up a notice on the board for the teams to mark down what they would like, and only 21 of the 28 teams marked something down.

There were 11 teams for Monday and Wedneday at 6:30PM and 8:00PM for 6 ends, and 10 teams for 6:30PM and 8:30PM for 8 ends. It looks like Friday will be an open fun night for anyone that is interested.

So I hope to have a section on this years registration form so everyone can mark down their pick of the two times as noted above. (check it out)
