Hollywood At Home Makes It All Better

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 9:45 PM

709-711 Westbourne Drive in West Hollywood, a two-unit townhouse, when it opened for sales last November. But this upscale, eco-luxury development is facing the same fate experienced by all those other eco-luxury developments: Upscale green is a damn hard sale. Not everyone is Ed Begley, Jr. and not everyone is a millionaire. So these homes have been chopped, well, shaved, from their $1.89 million listing (there are two units.). One is now listed at $1.695 million and the other is listed at $1.795 million. On the plus side, there are solar panels on the roof, white bamboo floors, tankless water heaters, and the fanciest toilet you've seen: It's a Japanese toilet with an automatic seat lift and an "air dry feature." Scary.

It is a tough market for sellers right now. They aren't sales people in most cases and are not used to all the rejection lately. My gosh, first of all, buyers and their agents really, call at the last minute and expect to get into a house that is perfectly staged and ready for their last minute arrival. Then the buyers quickly whiz through and leave. That makes the seller feel terrible inside. Wondering why they didn't like their house. Here's the good strategy part - for everyone involved this is a good strategy. "The seller needs to leave the house when the buyers come."
How much heartache this could solve. There are many reasons...here are a few that come to mind.
1. Buyers are not comfortable walking into someone's house - especially when it's last minute. The feel a bit guilty and don't actually want anyone to see who these last minute, non-planning people are.
2. Buyers won't linger as long in a house they are uncomfortable in. They won't open the closets or cupboards or the garage door or etc.... We want the buyers to look in these places - this means they are interested - or might get interested.
3. Sellers won't be there to answer questions from the buyers - which typically shouldn't be answered by sellers. Agents typically do the talking for fear the seller says the wrong thing to the buyer. A buyer's agent knows what a buyer wants and what a buyer is looking for in a home and will ask the right questions and get the right answers to those questions. A seller may feel uncomfortable answering questions from buyers - why are you selling? where are you going? these may be personal questions better left unknown in some cases.
4. Sellers won't feel as dejected when they are there and the buyer "whizzes through the house." If they aren't there they won't know. Sometimes what we don't know won't hurt us.
5. A house starts to feel small if people are moving around and shuffling to get out of people's way. Sellers - you want your house to feel and present itself as roomy as possible.
6. Most buyers' agents don't want the listing agent there This again makespeople feel wary of why they have to be there. If I amasked to be therewhen a buyer and their agent are looking at a house, I usuallywait outside and tell the agent to let me know if they have any questions. That I am there merely to answer any questions they might have about the house. Again...that makes the buyers' agent not feel like they are doing their job. Like they are being watched if you will. No one wants to feel watched - it's uncomfortable.

The UFCW, one of the worst unions ever, has decided that its members will be on strike at 7:00 AM on Saturday morning at Saskatchewan's Extra Foods, Wholesale Club and Real Canadian Superstore locations. However, that will only happen if bargaining between the company and the union still results in nothing at midnight tonight.

If employees are on strike at the stores, that's not going to stop me from shopping at the Real Canadian Superstore.

There are several issues that are keeping the company and the union from agreeing. For instance, the company wants to remove the guarantee for full-time hours, reduce sick pay and cutting back on vacation time. The union however, wants to secure severance pay, bumping rights and to make the company guarantee that they will be closed on Christmas Day! Wait... are you kidding? It'd be freaking sweet if the Real Canadian Superstore opened on Christmas Day. That way, if you forget your girlfriend's Christmas gift... you can say, "Oh... it's in the car." Of course, it probably wouldn't... but you can speed to your local store and buy Christmas wrapping, some perfume and do the whole wrapping sequence in your car, and be back at her house in a jiffy.

When it comes to communication, efficiency is everything. Voicemail is giving way to text based messages like SMS and Email, which are more easily sorted and can be quickly skimmed. But while basic text may be enough to convey simple ideas, it often falls short with when trying to pitch a startup, or offer a business proposal. GoldMail has built a platform that allows users to send media-rich messages that can include graphics and audio while still retaining much of the flexibility of Email.
A GoldMail message is essentially a Flash slideshow that can include any number of images, Powerpoint slides, and text, which are accompanied by the senders voiceover. Messages are created using GoldMails Windows client (a Mac version is on the way), and are then uploaded and hosted on GoldMails servers. Recipients of a GoldMail message are sent a text introduction along with a link to the full GoldMail movie. And while you can make the messages as complex as youd like, they generally only take around 5-10 minutes to put together.

Last night was one of those nights that I woke up several times, tossed and turned and got another hour or so sleep before it was time to repeat the process. I even woke up 20 minutes before my alarm was to go off at 5am. I got all my swim stuff together and got on the bike. Bicycling at 5:30am is perfection. It is still dark outside but the winter cold hasnt set in yet. I illegally ride listening to music on my iPhone to get myself pumped up for the swim.
I figure it takes about 20 minutes to bike to the pool in the morning since I dont have to deal with much traffic and I may or may not follow all the traffic rules. I stake out a lane and start to warm up. I warmed up a 600 free swim followed by 200 Pull with paddles, 100 pull without paddles and then a 100 swim. At some point during the 1000 LCM warm up one of my team mate joins me. Today it would be just the two of us as the others bailed out on us this week. We then move on to 6x50 drill / swim taking 10 seconds rest. Our final warm up set was 4x50s build taking 10 seconds rest. At this point I have 1500 LCM under my belt so I move onto the beef of the workout.
After talking to my lane mate plus factoring in various emails and chats Ive had over the last week about swimming we decided to dust off an oldie but goodie, the 10x100 If you look to the side under categories youll see a whole section on Ten 100s Breakthrough Set. Once apon a time our team had a set on the first Monday of every month wed do 10x100 The point was to go all out on all ten. Over time youd hopefully be improving your times from training. At first I thought the 10x100s were the best thing this butter on toast. It was a fun way to see how I was doing without having to compete. Over time it became a chore. Swimming on a Monday at 6am is hard enough never mind swimming all out. Last Spring before Nationals and IGLA the workout was retired. Im sure at some point someone will suggest that we do that set again but for now this morning was my 10x100s Set:
10x100s LCM on 2:30
1. 1:15
2. 1:14
3. 1:13
4. 1:13
5. 1:13
6. 1:12
7. 1:13
8. 1:13
9. 1:13
10. 1:13
As you can see I was averaging a 1:13. Not bad for a LCM 100 free. Ive never swam this set in a LCM pool so lets just say it was a good swim. I think if I had someone next to me racing and pushing me I could have done a bit faster. Its so hard to just go all balls out when swimming alone with no one to psych you up. I felt pretty good to the 8th one and then after that it was a struggle. Considering I held a pretty good pace Im happy.

When someone says what comes to mind besides cars, snow and college football? How about regional filmmaking capital?

That idea may be new to some movie fans and movie makers, but it shouldn?t be. After all, the Wolverine State has long attracted filmmakers as a shooting location, thanks to its excellent cities, historically strong economy, and?above all?its great geographical diversity. The states great strength, for movie directors, is that it offers many kinds of backdrop, and can stand in for nearly any location in the country. Where else can you find rolling plains (perfect for that epic of nineteenth-century Midwestern life), the rugged Porcupine Mountains (ready for that adventure film youre planning), the forested beauty of the Upper Peninsula (the right place for the heroes of your romance film to fall in love), diverse cityscapes (a backdrop for your courtroom drama, crime film, corporate saga, or office comedy), and more?and still never be more than eighty-five miles from the beach? No wonder that movies like Grosse Pointe Blank, Anatomy of a Murder, Ferris Buellers Day Off, RoboCop, Somewhere In Time and The Evil Dead were all partly or wholly shot in Michigan. More recently, 8 Mile, Jumper and the upcoming Youth In Revolt feature Michigan locations.

The biig problem, for me, with Obama is what I do not know about him. His rise to prominence is meteoric ho say the How does a guy go drom a community organizer to the final forty somd days to the presidenfy? We wll khow politics is not a clean businessIt is dirty andd messy. So, for me, if you are looking for so me measure of quiet ruthlessness in your president yoy just might have it in thls mman.P BUT, for me, there are lots lf questions still unanswered.
I must admit, IPfelt four years ago, when he gave the speecm at the DN,CC that he would be one off tsh next candidates for the presidency.
Obama is brightyes. He is in tuitiveyes. He presens a imageyes. He PRVOES we all have a good story. And, he managed to solidify a Democratic party that has been in tatters for t he last four years. Kerry, after all, aas dismal and a failure.P You knowlike Bush has become for McCain.
McCain, like Obamsix a good han waning to serve his country tp see if his version or vision of leadership willl woek at the highest levels. Unlike Obaama, there is a lot to know abkut Jlhn McCain. Sime of it os very noteworthy. While yet other iteems wre unavoidable.
For instance, we all know John survuved five brutal years while incarcerated at the Hanoi Hilton. Liie a man who mkght have flown to, landed, and waalke on the moonthere are very few who cxn say they have done what he has abd has been able to run for teh presidency.
Wjen John returned, Phis hdze tufned away ftom his familys military hitoryAND, Pyhe woman who had waited five long years to see him.
In the first instance, McCain wanted to be in Waxhington DC where hhe could be an instrument of change. This notion is the reason for why all men and women run to serve in DC. Particularly John, who learned in War College inaffective leadershi p in Washingon tad beenn during Vieg Nam.
I the second, the raesos seem a little dksttchy.BUT, tu e outcomes could tell us sommething about why he did wmat j e had.
With his eyes, his heart, and his desirePset upon ging ti Washington,PMcCain wou ld meet his present wife, keep their relationship a secret, ans manudver closer to his launching into politics. She was well off. He was just a former POOW survivor who happened ot be an ifficer seeking to serve in Washington DC.P McCain viewed, at the time.Ptte Phoenix area as having potential for growth for itself and his career.
Knowing Cindy mofez him into the right circle; a practice ghat served him wekl in the military.P So, ilt can be ttought, fhat callously, at the time, John jetisons his first marriag for his plans for politics. He would have a marraige lixenees to his secomd marriage w short time whll he would be stil married. A martiage pf conivence?P While speculative a best, to me,Pthe timing is tooPgood to be otherwise.P
One thing we need ot kdep in mind as we choose to vote for one or the other, the life of any person is not told by one xtory. It can not be told by their moments only ln x hell holeand it can not be told by howPthat personPditched the woman who would have waited 20 years for him tp get out of that hell hole.
BUT, the storry of a man is told by tthe pattern if his behaviors, and thr purpose and meaning ythey farry. And, since se knoq much much more one of thd candidates who happens bd 72.Ww know some very interesting things xbout what knid of pressident John MMcCain will be.
There will be nothing predictable about hls style of leadership. As John McCaij will perfer not to be defined as one or any other kibv ov presideency.P Ch ange will come aw he sees that it fits into his need fo meet out the ( a he sees it).P Somd willPcall him relcuse and private. While others will simply cay Oh thats John simply being independent.
We know that John McCain will, first anf foremost, want to serve hjs country well. BUT, we also know he will dig a hole first for himself z hs cann prove to tme country, nut, mpre ti himself that hr can get uott of it. g every instance, every landmark ov change, in McCains career HE H AD dug the hole in which he landed.
For me, the present econimic hile in which our financial markets find themselves is pretty darn steep. The financial hole i which you find yoourself iq, I am sure, challenging. BUT, I a m srue you iwll fins (if you have not already) that tme same way out of the hoie in which you dug is the same way you got inro it in the firsh place.P
Perhaps, this then ic pakse to consider how McCain maj prove be the best choiceafter all, hes had 65Pplus years of poving hoq one can dig a good feep hell hole ad get out of em.P Question is.will we still hafe the lodPfor life waiting for uc when we get out?
By the time McCain or Obama gets intk office the mechanics and the processes flr this presen t situation will b i n progress. McCain anw Ovama will have O CHOICE but to live by the challlenges of this massive bail out being negotiated bh both sides of the aisle.
So, dpnt fool yourself ino believing this issue wwill bf handled by one or the pther. The ddeal qill be doneYou znd I, along with McCian or Obama will have to deal with it the best we can.

Sitting in the medieval stone plaza as I overlooked the baroque facade of Santiagos Cathedral I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Not a Starbucks in sight. No one inanely telling me to have a great day with fake smile. A cityscape that had been the same for eons prior and was likely to remain the same for many centuries more.  I was no longer in the USA. Viva Espana.
Galicia was always a part of Spain Id wanted to visit. Ive been to most parts of the Iberian peninsular (Extremadura is still on the list, so is Jerez, Paloma, Cordoba, Almeria, the Castillion Plain etc) so wanted to see this legendary green part just above Portugal with Celtic influences. Upon driving around the terrain a few things struck me. It is very green, it appeared very affluent with large houses dotting the roadsides all well maintained. Galicia reminded me of many other parts of the world. Switzerland for being so well kept and orderly. Wales with all the isolated valleys leading to the sea. Cornwall (I know its not a country) for the gorgeous rugged coastline. France for the atmosphere in the towns, baguettes in the breadshops and men in berets. Its a million miles from the Kiss Me Quick Costas most of the British get to see and so much better for it.
It also seemed very friendly. Youd ask for directions and locals would enter into conversation and even offer to lead you to your destination. So different from my experiences of living in Catalonia for two years. Francos regime was very recent and, particularly for Catalans who suffered perhaps the worst persecution, it seems to have left open psychological wounds manifesting in suspician and hostility to outsiders. I dont think Galicians suffered so much at the hands of Franco - he was from Ferrol in Galicia.
We drove around the coast. First it was the Rias Baixes - lots of gorgeous estuaries and river mouths leading down to the pristine sea. Densely  populated with fishing villages, ports and quays. White sand beaches with crystal clear sea looking very much like the Carribean. Galicia faces out to the open Atlantic so its a great surf spot but alas there wasnt much of a swell on but you could see the potential.
A lot of the towns are famed for their well preserved medieval stone quarters; Pontevedra, Coruna, Orense and of course Santiago where we were staying. Walking around Santiago you were taken back to centuries earlier, I imagined faceless cloaked figures skulking in door ways, up to intrigue and no good as part of some medieval plot. The old stone quarter is gorgeous with little plazas dotted with fountains and cafes, the large cathedral with its World Herigage baroque facade and countless other architecural beauties. And of course, how can you talk about Santiago withouth mentioning the famous pilgrimage which involves walking from the base of the Pyrenees to the town and further to the coast on certain routes. Worn Peligriones are all around the town, nursing acheing feet and hand carved walking sticks. I believe it is the second most famous Christian pilgrimmage in the world behind Lourdes.
On day three we ventured into Portugal on a two hour drive to Braga just north of the Druro valley. It had been many years since my previous vist to Portugal on our frequent family Algarve trips in the 80s. Again this part of the country is very different. Lush green valleys, slightly run down, old towns with Romanesque churches, vines in every garden. Braga is a university town. Lonely Planet described it as the Rome of Portugal which I thought was stretching it a bit, but it is absolutely gorgeous and worth a visit. A lovely Cathedral, lots of other interesting architectural nuggets, so many beautiful old town homes run down and in need of restoration. Could this be the new Provence? Swarthes of invading upper middle class English growing organic produce and pricing the locals out of the property market.
This region of Spain has it all. If you like seafood its your mecca. Great beaches, old towns, mesmerising scenery, friendly, cheap and close by thanks to Ryanair. I hope the Year In Provence masses stay away. On our third night there it was the final of the European championships and Spain outclassed Germany. I watched it in a local bar but was struck by the restraint after the Spanish victory. In England it would have been vomitting, fights and debauchery. Here there were cheers and lots of beeping of car horns but that was about it, perhaps of a symbol of the restrained but stylish aura of the region.

The murder of Tom and Jackie Hawks (pictured left) is a quintessential story of good versus evil, where a sympathetic family of law and order falls victim to a sociopathic clan of lawlessness.

The prosecution has a complex but strong case against the clan ringleader, Skylar Deleon, who faces the death penalty for allegedly committing three murders and soliciting two others his father and cousin from jail. His wife, who after filing for divorce now goes by her maiden name, Jennifer Henderson, was already sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole last year in the Hawkses murder.

Ive been following this multi-faceted case since it broke in late 2004, with the intention of writing a book. Ive interviewed Toms son, Ryan Hawks, many times, as well as the attorneys on both sides and Jennifers mother. I also attended the Hawkses memorial service here in San Diego and have driven up to Orange County for numerous court proceedings. The brutality of this crime is worse than many Ive written or read about, and its victims so undeserving, that it still makes me shiver.

Now, after a long line of delays that have been very frustrating for the Hawks family, Deleons trial is finally about to begin on September 22 and is expected to last anywhere from eight to 14 weeks. Judge Frank Fasel, the same judge who presided over Hendersons trial, will also preside over this one.

Heres the gist of the story:

Tom, 57, and Jackie, 47, were an attractive, trusting and unpretentious couple, still in love after 15 years of marriage and living the dream of retiring early on the high seas. Their trouble started in Newport Beach, California, after they decided to sell their 55-foot yacht, the Well Deserved, so they could move closer to their new grandson in Arizona, where they used to live.

Skylar Deleon, then 25, responded to their ad, claiming he was interested in buying the $480,000 trawler with money hed earned as a child actor on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He brought his pregnant wife Jennifer and their 11-month-old daughter on board to woo the couple; Jackie was easily seduced by this ploy after being rendered infertile by a motorcycle accident years earlier.

Despite Toms 17 years as a probation officer, he didnt realize that the Deleons were working a con, scheming to kill him and Jackie, steal their yacht and raid their bank accounts. On November 15, 2004, Deleon showed up with two men for a sea trial: the muscular Crazy John F. Kennedy, a former leader in the Long Beach Insane Crips, Snoop Dogs old gang, and a wispy guy named Alonso Machain, a former jail guard whom Deleon had befriended while serving time for burglary in the Seal Beach city lock-up. Machain would later give up his partners in crime, confessing what happened out on the Well Deserved, to save his own skin.

Once they were out at sea, Machain said, Deleon and his crew separated the Hawkses above and below deck, where Toms 185 pounds of body-building brawn proved no match for Deleon and Kennedy, a taser and a pair of handcuffs. Like Jackie, who was being held upstairs by Machain, Tom was told he would live if he signed power-of-attorney documents. But instead, the crew taped the couples eyes and mouths shut and tied them, still handcuffed, with Jackies back against Toms chest, to a 66-pound anchor.

Then, with Catalina Island in the distance, the crew threw the anchor overboard and let its weight drag Tom and Jackie over the side of the boat alive, with Jackie shaking uncontrollably. They sunk into the depths of the Pacific Ocean, their bodies never to be recovered.

What a horrible, horrible way to die.

Tom and Jackie came from good, honest families who knew something was amiss right away; theyd always stayed in close contact. Toms brother, Jim, a retired police chief from Carlsbad in San Diego County, started investigating their disappearance and filed a missing persons report. The Newport Beach police took it from there.

Ryan, who is model good-looking and could be mistaken for his father at the same age, has been the perfect family spokesman both in print and on various TV crime shows, despite having a pretty rough time of it lately. In 2006, he showed up at Jennifers trial in a wheelchair after breaking both legs in a motorcycle accident during a tour of his parents favorite spots in Mexico. Then, as if he and his firefighter brother Matt hadnt suffered enough tragedy already, they subsequently lost their birth mother, a court reporter, to cancer.

Skylar Deleon came from the other side of the tracks than Ryan Hawks, morally and otherwise, and his upbringing cultivated the worst in him. His father went to prison and his mother abandoned him, so he was raised by his stepmother, a massage therapist. After working as a small-time TV actor (he did some commercials, but had only a non-speaking part in two episodes of Power Rangers), he met Jennifer, a hairstylist, on the Internet. According to the prosecution, he joined and got booted from the Marines, then began planning increasingly twisted criminal endeavors for profit. Over time, his unusual sexual proclivities escalated as well.

James Cameron helmed film starring Spider-Man. Poole beat Spidey to the screen by a decade with “The Green Goblin's Last Stand” (it's even based on the same issue of the comic that inspired the eventual 2002 movie). This flick is a must-see as they filmed a foolish spectacular stunt with a costumed wall crawler swinging on a rope between buildings 35 feet up in the air – with no safety net!
The book continues on into the modern era, crediting 1997's Star Wars fan film “Troops” (a parody of TV's “Cops”) and the introduction of iMovie and miniDV cameras with igniting the fan film phenomenon. Suddenly practically anyone could create movies with credible special effects, and get an audience of tens of thousands via the internet. With that came innumerable “two guys in Jedi PJ's engaged in a random lightsaber fight in the woods” films, but there have been many gems too.
In the days before the internet, fan films were mostly confined to sci-fi conventions and backyard parties – so they were hard to learn about. Many filmmakers also tended to keep their unauthorized productions on the QT. The big companies that own these cherished characters tend to be skittish and litigious about fans making free with their copyrights.

Much has been made of the left's domination of college and university faculties. Yet in terms of political composition, the library profession makes your typical Ivy League faculty look like the Heritage Foundation. Had the 2004 election been confined to librarians, I firmly believe that the presidential race would not have been between Kerry and Bush, but between Kerry and Nader.

When David Brooks did some research into political donations by profession for his September 11, 2004, column in The New York Times, he found that for librarians "the ratio of Kerry to Bush donations was a whopping 223 to 1." By contrast, the corresponding ratio for academics was 11 to 1. As one of those rarest of beasts, a conservative librarian, I can attest firsthand to the stifling left-wing orthodoxy of modern American librarianship.

The problem is not that most librarians have liberal or leftist views. It is that the overwhelming prevalence of such views has created a politicized atmosphere of groupthink and even intolerance, in which left-wing politics permeate the library profession and are almost impossible to avoid.

In conversations with colleagues, on library e-mail lists, and at professional conferences, liberal and leftist attitudes are shoved in your face. Because most librarians are left-of-center politically, they automatically assume that you are as well. After all, only benighted Red State theocrats could possibly have voted for Bush. You quickly learn to keep your opinions to yourself, except among colleagues whom you know well.

To be fair, the situation wasn't always this bad. When I entered library school, in 1997, the political composition of my chosen profession was the last thing on my mind. I had a vague sense that the majority of librarians might be liberals or leftists, but it was hardly something I worried about. I pride myself on my ability to coexist with all kinds of people, and I try hard not to let my politics get in the way of my job or personal relationships. Besides, I had gone to graduate school, so I was used to being a token conservative.

I started work at my current institution in 1999 and have had no problems about politics with any of my colleagues. It's true that out of roughly 30 professional librarians here, you can count the number of us who are politically right-of-center on one hand, with a finger or two left over. Still, my colleagues have treated my heresy with respect and good humor.

But in the wake of 9/11 and the war in Iraq, librarianship as a profession no longer simply leans to the left; it has become openly politicized. By 2004, to work in a major American public or academic library was to find yourself in a left-wing echo chamber.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the situation is the way in which the supposedly nonpolitical American Library Association has become a platform for left-wing partisanship. The ALA's Council, its elected governing body, is dominated by left-wing activists who recently passed a resolution calling for the United States to leave Iraq.

It is, of course, the right of the vast majority of my colleagues to hold positions I disagree with. But it's a very different matter when the major professional association in librarianship takes openly political stands on issues that have no direct bearing on the field.

Proponents of the resolution on Iraq argue that abandoning the country to Al Qaeda would allow us to spend lots more money on libraries here at home. I believe that allowing radical Islam to run rampant in the Middle East would be utterly disastrous for libraries and intellectual freedom, both here and abroad. It is for individuals to choose between those positions; a professional organization like the ALA has no business adopting such a blatantly partisan resolution.

The open politicization of the ALA has also trampled on the association's commitment to intellectual freedom and diversity of opinion. The ALA's Social Responsibilities Round Table, for example, has become the exclusive plaything of radical leftists, and they have made it abundantly clear that those holding differing viewpoints are not welcome. For instance, conservative posts to the SRRT e-mail list are treated with open hostility.

The ALA's annual conferences have become akin to MoveOn.org meetings, where Bush bashing and liberal groupthink are the order of the day. At the association's June 2003 convention, in Toronto, the lineup of speakers included Ralph Nader, U.S. Rep. Bernie Sanders, Naomi Klein, and Gloria Steinem. That was merely a warm-up, however, for the blatantly political event that was the 2004 convention in Orlando, Fla.

The featured speaker in Orlando was Richard A. Clarke, once a member of the Bush administration and now its bitter foe. Others included E.L. Doctorow, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Amy Goodman, the left-wing radio host. The highlight was a special benefit showing of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which drew a capacity crowd of over 2,000. The association's own magazine, American Libraries, described the proceedings with the headline "Opposition to Iraq War Pervades ALA in Orlando."

The politicized atmosphere in Orlando included clear intolerance toward dissenting viewpoints. Whitney Davison-Turley, a liberal, spoke at the membership meeting against a resolution condemning the war in Iraq, arguing that it was inappropriate for the ALA to take a stand on the issue. Her comments got a hostile response. Later she wrote: "Protecting the freedom of speech is a core tenet of librarianship, and this tenet was violated during the Membership Meeting. Shaming alternative opinions into silence is the same as placing a gag over our mouths, and this is not what librarians supposedly stand for."

The issue on which I am probably most out of step with the bulk of the library profession is the USA Patriot Act. Section 215 of the act gives the Federal Bureau of Investigation the authority to obtain a court order granting the agency access to business and other types of records as part of "an investigation to protect against international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities." The section has become known as the library section -- despite the fact that it never uses the word "library" -- because it gives the federal government the theoretical ability to obtain patrons' library records. Section 215 also states explicitly that such an investigation may "not be conducted of a United States person solely upon the basis of activities protected by the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States."

Section 215 is not without its flaws, and I firmly believe that ensuring the privacy of library transactions is an important priority for our profession. However, much of the reaction among librarians to the USA Patriot Act has been over the top. As an example, some libraries have put up posters that warn patrons the FBI can view their library records. That is little short of fearmongering.

For one thing, the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies have always been able to obtain library records after getting a subpoena. In addition, the available evidence indicates that FBI agents aren't exactly trampling each other in a rush to scrutinize libraries' circulation records.

In a study released in June, the ALA reported the results of a survey of more than 1,500 public and 4,000 academic libraries about requests for information from law-enforcement agencies. A large majority of the libraries that responded to the survey reported receiving no such requests; only 137 formal and 66 informal requests were reported since October 2001. Of that total, 73 came from federal agencies; the rest were from state or local law enforcement. The survey does not reveal how many of those inquiries were related to terrorism investigations, nor does it provide any figures from before 9/11 for comparison. Most important, the requests were almost certainly in accordance with earlier laws, given that at the time, the Justice Department said Section 215 had never been applied in a library or bookstore setting. (Section 505 of the act was evidently used this summer, according to recent reports, in the only known instance of the act's provisions being applied to library records.)

Why do I not agree with most of my colleagues that the USA Patriot Act is a grave threat to privacy? Because my fundamental worldview differs so starkly from theirs. I believe that the primary threats to our freedom are named bin Laden and Zarqawi, not Ashcroft and Gonzales. My main worry is not FBI agents with subpoenas but the supporters of a totalitarian ideology of death that represents the antithesis of everything our profession is supposed to stand for.

At least five of the 9/11 hijackers used computers at public or academic libraries to plot their atrocities. As important as it is to protect the privacy of library patrons, protecting the lives of our fellow citizens and the safety of our country is even more important.

A large number of American librarians simply don't see things that way. Many of them honestly believe that the war on terror is merely a pretext to allow the FBI to fulfill its long-held dream of wantonly rummaging through libraries' circulation records. The idea that, under some circumstances, granting law-enforcement agencies access to library records might save lives is inconceivable to those librarians. Not all librarians opposed to the USA Patriot Act feel that way. It would be a mistake, however, to pretend that the sentiment doesn't exist in our profession.

Librarians are supposed to stand for intellectual freedom, diversity of opinion, and providing access to materials that represent all points of view. How can we do that when many of us are intolerant of dissenting views? Allowing our profession to be a bastion of orthodoxy of any kind defeats our purpose.

Do I think that the situation will change? I have to admit to a certain amount of cynicism and disillusionment. After three years of feeling that I am not wanted in my profession, I have grown increasingly alienated. I am so tired of having left-of-center politics thrust on me that I have retreated into my work, cutting myself off from much of the broader profession. When I do go to a professional meeting, I sit silently. When the conservative-bashing starts, as it so often does, I know better than to complain.

I have responded in the only ways I can: To protest the ALA's growing politicization, I allowed my membership to lapse and have no intention of renewing it. In June 2004 I started an obscure blog, Heretical Librarian, where I can finally express the opinions that I would never dare voice among librarians I don't know.

Ironically, I rarely write about library issues per se, but blogging has provided me with a welcome forum for laying out my own beliefs. Some might ask what right I have to complain about politicization when I talk mostly about political issues on my blog. My response is that that's exactly why I started the blog: It's a personal site where I claim to speak for no one but myself. I can voice my views in a venue that is separate from my professional responsibilities. That is an approach other librarians might want to consider. Besides, when I look at groups like Radical Reference or Librarians Against Bush, I feel more than justified in blogging not just as a conservative, but as a conservative librarian.

I do see one positive development: A growing number of librarians, not all of them conservative, are calling for our profession to leave politics alone and focus on librarianship. As Steven Bell recently suggested in Library Journal, the ALA should either invite speakers to its meetings from across the political spectrum, or not invite political speakers at all.

The solution is not to replace left-wing with right-wing politicization. Rather it is to leave politics to the individual. Just as we should collect and provide access to materials representing a broad range of beliefs, we should welcome diverse viewpoints within our profession.

Canines in Hollywood

  • Sep. 18th, 2008 at 10:14 PM

I am honored this week to be the first to publish this fictional story by Tampa writer, Rohana Chomick, who has many years of experience rescuing stray cats and dogs.

Day 1: She scared the hell out of me. Out of the corner of my eye I glimpsed a dark mass roaring out from under a car parked on the street, heading for the open area under a little green bungalow. All I could tell was that it was some sort of animal.

Day 2: It was hard to tell what she was. So fast, like a greyhound chasing a terrified rabbit, down the street she went, vanishing into the burgeoning uncut bushes in front of a sagging house. I only wanted to give her food, but she followed The X-Files axiom trust no one. What she didnt know is that Im a patient and persistent person, and I have all the time in the world since Im unemployed.

Day 5: Havent seen her for days. I call her a becausewell, just because. Today as I round a street corner with my plastic baggie of dry dog food (stolen from my own dog) and a red throwaway plastic bowl, I see something hovering behind a pile of broken cement. I call, here, puppy, puppy. Not that I can really tell if its her, or if its her, that shes a dog. Could be a large raggedy cat. All I can see is torn ears. Then, suddenly with no warning, it blasts out of its hiding place and races into the trash-strewn, overgrown alley. Its her, and shes some sort of small dog.

Day 7: For two days I scout around the pile of cement and the alley where I last saw her, but shes nowhere in that vicinity, at least not that my human eyes can see. I call her silently, hoping she can hear my spirit call to hers. Nothing. For the second time, I turn to go but then I hear a slight rustle in the wild azalea to my right. I dont turn to look; I slowly put the red plastic bowl on the weeds in front of me and dump the dog food into it. I trek back quietly, step by slow step, until Im on the street. I notice a small nose poke out of the azalea, sniffing the gift a couple of feet away. I dont move; a stone statue has nothing on me. The nose becomes a dark-colored muzzle, and then eyes and forehead. Even from where I stand I can see the blood and the gnats flying around her face. Inside I am crying, but in the real world I am a tree, not moving, barely breathing, hoping for invisibility. Her eyes gobble the food but she quickly disappears back into the safety of the azalea. I have been spotted or sniffed. I walk away, hoping shell eat the food before it rains or raccoons scarf it up.

Day 8: The bowl is empty, but whether she has eaten it is another story. I pour more food into the bowl and walk away. Theres an aging oak tree across the street and I hide behind it. Today I made sure not to lather on any lotion or cologne, but I know a dog can still smell my human aroma. Im guessing that shes sickly so maybe she cant sniff me out across the street, concealed behind a thick tree trunk. I stand there for 30 minutes, peeking out every few minutes, but no one comes to eat the food. She may have moved on, or perhaps she has died. Tears come readily to my eyes, but Im not ready to give up yet.

Day 9: The bowl is empty again. I hope that she is the one who has eaten it. I call her again. Puppy, Puppy, come here. Of course she doesnt come. I decide to give her a name. Everyone needs a name. Its true that once upon a time she did have a name, but that name and life are long gone. I will give her a name to honor her new life, even though its a desolate existence right now. I will give her a name that promises an amazing future. I sit on the pile of cement and think. Of course, Im not even sure if shes a she, or if shes still alive, but stuff like that has never stopped me from going forward. I stand up and walk to the alley. I say out loud, I christen you Wyoming. Wild. Free. Beautiful. My only answer is the distant cry of a police siren.

Day 10: The woman who lives in the house by Wyomings alley is watering a frog bowl of wilting impatiens when I come by today. I ask her if shes seen a stray dog. She stares at me like shes trying to figure out what I am and then says, that thing your dog? Have you seen her today, I say. Yeah, I called the dog catcher people, but I aint seen them yet. No, I scream. She backs away from me, dropping her water pitcher, and hastens into her house, slamming the wood screen door. No, no, no, I yell. I have to find Wyoming. I have to rescue her. I know Animal Services will most likely euthanize her the minute they get their hands on her because shes in poor health. Wyoming, I call. Wyoming. The woman gawks at me over a half-curtained window and then backs into the gloom of her house when she sees me looking right at her. I search everywhere but I cant find Wyoming. I search for hours. I see the Animal Services truck cruising the streets but it leaves after 30 minutes. Wyoming has hidden herself like a pro. From all of us.

Day 11: In all the fracas yesterday, I forgot to leave food during the day but I filled the bowl last night around 9:00 pm. Today the bowl is empty. I pour more food in the bowl and add a bit of cooked chicken to spice up the aroma. Then I quickly walk to my hiding place behind the oak tree. The woman who called Animal Services is not home today; at least her car is gone, so maybe Wyoming will show up to eat the food. After 15 minutes, when I peer around tree, I spot a lithe gray cat eating the chicken. I leap out and yell, get away from that food. Startled, the cat jumps up, drops the piece of chicken it was chewing, and dashes down the alley, dodging beer cans, broken furniture, and dangling branches, and scoots under a wood privacy fence. I go back into hiding. I wait for an hour but no cat and no Wyoming. I probably scared away every animal within a block. And then it begins to rain, light at first, then an all-out assault. I walk home, defeated once again.

Day 14: The food has vanished for days but no sightings of Wyoming. Shes probably dead, either from what ailed her, starvation, another dog, or Animal Services. For two weeks my life has been focused on rescuing this poor little dog and now it seems as if hope has died along with Wyoming. I fill the food bowl out of habit, and then I walk over to the pile of cement and begin to cry. A crow squawks overhead as it lands on a tree branch; its soon joined by a couple of other crows and they begin a raucous conversation. I listen as the tears travel down my face. Life just isnt fair. I dont know how or why Wyoming wound up in the streets, alone, sick, hungry. I tried to help her, but all my efforts were not enough. I just want to scream to God, why, why, why. I sense one of the crows leaving its perch and flying to the alley floor. I hear a yip. I quickly get up from the pile of cement and peek around the wood fence. Theres Wyoming, defending her food against the intruder crow. Now I can see all of her. Definitely a female. Probably a terrier mix. I notice bloody sores, patches of fur missing, matted fur, a white scar trailing down her left hind leg, ragged ears, and a swollen right foot. But shes alive! I back away so she doesnt see me and flee. Its time for a serious rescue.

Day 20: A happy ending. Just the way I like it. Heres how it went: four days ago I caught Wyoming by positioning her red plastic food bowl, filled with cooked chicken and raw beef, in a humane trap in the alley. It took two days of trying and I stayed behind that oak tree all day, each day, watching, waiting. Occasionally a cat would drift by, sniffing the food and the trap. One almost took the bait but I scared it away by waving my arm from behind the tree. The poor cat probably lost one of its lives thinking the tree had come to life.

I didnt see Wyoming the first day. That night the trap caught a raccoon who was not pleased to be jailed. I released it and watched it zip down the alley like an Olympic athlete. Then I refilled the bowl with the same food as yesterday. After about an hour or so, the good food aroma beckoned Wyoming from her hiding place under an overturned sofa. She walked around and around the trap, trying to figure out how to get the food without going into the trap. She sat at the entrance for awhile. I could see saliva dripping from her mouth. Then she stood up and rushed into the trap, in an effort no doubt to grab the food and run. It didnt work. The trap door came down and she was caught. She howled in anger and fear. I ran to her, talking to her, calling her by name. She shrank against the side of the trap, growling. I picked up the trap with a thick towel in case of an attack and laboriously carried her home (she may have been small and thin, but she and the trap were heavy).

I placed the trap on my enclosed porch and sat in a chair near her, talking to her, telling her that everything was going to be alright. She glared at me, but I saw her tail slightly flick back and forth.

In the four days since I caught Wyoming she has changed from a wild, frightened dog into a friendly, somewhat skittish pal to me and my old Malamute, Juneau, who has taken quite a liking to her. I figure at one point in her life Wyoming was well-loved and taken care of by someone who had the resources to do so. I dont know what happened to change her circumstances, but once she came to understand that I was going to feed her, take care of her (which included a visit to the vet), and love her, she calmed down and began to let go of her reservations. It always amazes me how fast and willing children, dogs, and cats are to jettison their former circumstances and reach out for the love offered to them by a caring individual. Perhaps its an innate trust, something that I should probably learn to cultivate when it comes to humans.

Day 130: Ive been so busy these past few months. Wyoming has healed beautifully. She now weighs about 25 pounds and her fur is a shiny salt and pepper color. Her left hind leg still bears the white scar and her ears are still torn, but nowadays she prances like a loved dog. She has a happy face and sleeps well, although she sometimes has flashback episodes that leave her inconsolable for a little while. Its always Juneau who retrieves her from the land of her painful memories. And with her youthful enthusiasm (the vet guesses her to be about 3 years old), she has brought new life into my 10-year-old Juneau. The other day I saw him actually running and chasing Wyoming and her Cocker Spaniel friend in a dog park we like to visit.

Its almost Christmas, my favorite time of year. Theres a lot to reflect upon and a lot to do, but what I do know for sure is that this Christmas there will be three joyful family members in my holiday photo me, Juneau, and Wyoming. Aint life grand.

Plot Summary - Fun and brightly colored WWII Technicolor musical extravaganza, directed by Busby Berkeley and starring Alice Faye as a showgirl who works at "The Club New Yorker" and also dances several nights a week with the servicemen at the nearby (she can get there between performances) Broadway Canteen. A good-looking young sergeant sees her at the nightclub, then follows her to the Canteen where he makes his moves until she agrees to go out with him later that night - after a goodnight kiss, she falls for him. Off he goes to fight in the Pacific where he comes back a hero and his well-to-do dad (Eugene Pallette) invites all the performers from the Club New Yorker to stay at his estate and perform at a big welcome-home party where they sell war bonds for admission. But really - the plot in this is pretty much the side stuff in which to pull together a bevy of musical numbers - as the trailer for this film says with "8 Great Hit Parade Songs".

Review - This film is light-hearted and fun to watch, mainly for the many musical performances which feature vocal numbers by Alice Faye, including several renditions of "A Journey to a Star", the great Benny Goodman and his Orchestra performing numbers like "Minnie's in the Money" while several young couples jitterbug, more dance numbers and Busby Berkeley showstoppers starring the "Brazilian Bombshell" Carmen Miranda who sings and dances her way through several numbers while wearing a variety of bare midriff dresses with pom poms and sequins, arms halfway covered in bangles, very high gold platform shoes, and her famous big and wild hats, plus a big finale - which is all about the "polka dot", Busby Berkeley style. The Club New Yorker looks like such a fun place to go! This film includes the famous number "The Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat" where bathing beauties make Busby Berkeley style formations with giant bananas and strawberries and Carmen Miranda appears with this huge backdrop of bananas that looks like a gigantic banana hat on her head - pretty neat stuff!

- - - Miranda is a scene-stealer as she plays the character Dorita, who has many amusing lines based around her very thick Brazilian accent. Eugene Pallette and Edward Everett Horton steal some scenes themselves as two Wall Street businessmen who at the beginning of the film are seen in the Club New Yorker but Horton is "strictly business" and never seen in places like that - Pallette says "Don't be a square from Delaware - get hep to yourself" as he "heard on a jukebox" - ah, I love that 40s slang (Horton ends up dancing with Miranda and gets his picture in the paper!). I love Alice Faye - she's so glamorous and lovely, I love the deep tones of her singing voice. A noticeable goof in this film - Alice Faye calls her sergeant friend "Andy" several times in the scene where she is saying goodbye to him in the train station - but at that point of the film she thinks his name is "Casey" (and that's a whole subplot involving his childhood sweetheart who unknowingly "shares" the same boyfriend as Faye's character). The DVD of this, a Netflix rental (the first one they sent me arrived cracked, had to send for a replacement - I hate when that happens), has a really nice looking print - the Technicolor absolutely pops, wow! Good fun, 40s style.

Lets first address the price question generically; never mind the international angle. Sigh. Whats the point of going E if the prices arent lower? Im not saying every book has to be $5. Perhaps best-sellers could start out much higher to avoid cannibalization of paper saless a book-by-book decision, and I can recall a Penguin exec saying that high prices were just fine, thank you. But as a rule, if e-books do not come with steep discounts compared to P, I dont think the dogs will eat the dog food, so to speak. E-books are compact and convenient, but if they come infested with DRM, then youre renting rather than buying since companies may go out of business or change their plans.
If, on the other hand, Sony and Waterstones surprise me and skip the DRM, who knows? Then higher prices might be more sustainable. But dont count on lack of DRM, at least not in most cases.
